Amigurumi

Wednesday, 06 February, 2008

Strange where the internet takes you. Last week, Bec emailed me a link to this Amigurumi Ninja. It's so cute! She suggested making them and throwing them at people, accompanied by ninja noises. (Of course, at that point, I thought of Janet and Simon!)

Then this afternoon Kinokuniya sent me their latest newsletter (with a special 20% members-only discount to celebrate Chinese New Year! Woohoo, let's go!) I noticed it had this book in it and that the soft toys it depicted looked an awful lot like that ninja: Kyuuto! Japanese Crafts!: Amigurumi. And that's when I discovered amigurumi—small crocheted or knitted stuffed toys or anthropomorphic creatures which are, of course, very cute.

Here are some examples in crochet and in knitting (but it's felted knitting; those knitted examples are by the Crafty Alien). There are also lots of free patterns available online (the psychotic tomato and the fat kitty made me laugh and think of Bec!)

To quote one forum user, “OMG I think I just passed out from too much cuteness!”

Hee!

The best thing about the Fat Kitty is the aerial view.  And the Psychotic Tomato is…well, psychotic.  (Did you ever see that 80s movie Attack of the Killer Tomatoes?)

Also I thought this line in the Wikipedia entry was hilarious: “The pervading aesthetic of amigurumi is cuteness. To this end, typical amigurumi animals have an over-sized spherical head on a cylindrical body with undersized extremities.”

How to make cuteness completely pedestrian.

I just saw the felted raccoon and owl…OMG I think I just passed out from too much cuteness!

Oh! I want one! Must find my crochet hooks.

Kathleen, you’re going to have to teach me to crochet all over again! I’ve completely forgotten!!!
