I was disappointed by that article. It is very dismissive of the spiritual suffering argument.
I am still investigating the issue, but it strikes me that all of Jesus’ statements on the cross, and the gospel accounts themselves, are about mental and spiritual agony. The Trinity has been ripped apart! Can we even comprehend the significance?
He’s dismissive of the spiritual suffering argument because he doesn’t see that the Bible backs it up. He believes that the evidence of the Trinity being ripped apart is very slim and is mostly based on, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” from Psalm 22 which isn’t a psalm about being forsaken about God but rather trusting in God.
You’ve started me on a thought path!
