Last night was the black and white ball at church. Ben was in Sydney all day at some worldviews conference workshop thing so I went by myself. Susan came and borrowed my entire candle collection (NB: I do
not like candles; people just keep giving them to me because they think that I
must like them because I have so many). I spent the day feeling miserable for reasons which I don't want to go into but you can probably guess, and I finished knitting my
Sophie bag using 8 ply wool and 5.5 mm needles (because they are all I have at the moment) while watching episodes of
Neon Genesis Evangelion.
In the afternoon I repainted my nails black, got dressed in black and was picked up by some friends from church to go to the ball. We didn't turn into pumpkins on the way and we arrived just in time for the food. The hall looked lovely, decorated with black and white streamers, fairy lights, black and white tablecloths and lots of white candles. Seating was random by number.
Everyone looked fabulous, particularly Stu who had sewn his outfit together that afternoon (half black, half white—the white half with black harlequin diamond-shaped patches) and Janet who had painted her fingernails alternately black and white, who had a white fluffy Russian-type hat, black and white striped arm warmers with white fluffy trim and a black handkerchief-hem dress. (Stu and Janet tied for first place in the costume competition but Stu got it by default because Janet's on the night church committee who all signed the prize of the Black and White Ball black and white ball.)
After dinner there was dancing and I finally plucked up the courage to get up and dance. It's nice dancing with people you know who don't care if you look completely ridiculous and who like being completely ridiculous themselves. I was also pleased that the music wasn't your standard fare of “YMCA”, “Nutbush” and lots of techno—we did have a bit of ABBA but we also had Jamiroquai (who is extremely funky to dance to) and lots of big band Robbie Williams/Dave Brubeck/jazz type numbers which I totally loved. It was all being played off Dave's laptop and he has
28 days worth of music on there.
Everything wound down by about 11:30 and everyone helped clean up and pack up. Ben came to pick me up and I gave him the black and white chocolates that had been on our tables.

yeh I got so many candles for one of my birthdays i was like !!! but then after one black out, I found them incredibly useful and and have found to appreciate it for those times ... mostly am too scared might burn down house.
The bag doesn’t look that great at the moment. I’m still deciding whether or not to felt it. I was thinking of making a couple more and then felting them all together.
Candles are good for helping you study. See, you light a candle as you start studying, and then if you get distracted and play with the dog, you remember that you have a candle burning. Therefore, you have to go back and study. Just don’t light it first thing in the morning before going to uni - I left my candle burning all day once. Luckily my mum was home, but she forgot to put it out too. By the grace of God and by the grace of God alone, the house didn’t burn down. Say, who wants to be my flatmate next year?
Not I.
To Ben: nyaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah
(Whoops, candle’s burning, better get back to study)
This Stuvac, I’m burning the candle at BOTH ENDS! AHA HA HA! I crack me up…
ahhahahhahahhah
i dont’ get it. but obviously its exam time. anything is funny.
You guys are turning into complete dads with those jokes.
You underestimate the value of the humble pun!
