When the “means” of art, its various instruments, become detached from the human world of moral action and spiritual meaning, the damage they can do is beyond estimation. And yet the world is also full of people who, in their eagerness to tell the truth they see, ignore those instruments or employ them carelessly. It's vital to attend to the world as it is, refusing to don the armor of aestheticism; it's vital to use the “means” with the utmost skill and care, to be as vivid and elegant as possible. This is why writing is hard.
Shortly after it was published, I wound up defending it to a journalist who had loved my previous novel, Neverwhere, particularly its social allegories. He had turned Stardust upside down and shaken it, looking for social allegories, and found absolutely nothing of any good purpose.
“What's it for?” he had asked, which is not a question you expect to be asked when you write fiction for a living.
“It's a fairytale,” I told him. “It's like an ice cream. It's to make you feel happy when you finish it.”

Thanks for the Made it link…very helpful for charting the new sexy crafter across the world…
Just a quick note: The Labyrinth sequel manga is so very much not worth the time unfortunately. It’s about Toby, the script is basically a re-hash of the best bits from the film and the plot is extremely weak. I’ve only read the first in the series but I’m very much not bothering with the others. From someone who owns two copies of the film, two copies of the soundtrack, the screenplay, the novella based on the movie and Froud’s Goblin Book…. I may eb being too hard on it but I was uninspired by it. Just thought you’d like to know. ;p
Oh - I have one of those DVD stores round the corner from me called DVD Lounge. It is SO cool. In some ways, it doesn’t matter what DVD you get because the process is so interesting.
Rates are really cheap (only $1 for anything on Tuesdays!). Also you get to watch previews in cool futuristic looking pods.
If you find a free night to come round, we can go there and rent something.
