Down with the bug

Sunday, 28 September, 2003

Well, it had to happen ... I've finally caught Ben's bug. I've spent most of today in bed and have, unfortunately, missed out on seeing Pirates of the Caribbean with my friends. I hope that I won't be out as long as Ben was (almost two weeks!) but maybe my body is clamouring for a real holiday. Yum cha with the Creative Arts/Arts students went well. Many had never been before and were quite adventurous, being brave enough to try exotic dishes such as tripe and chicken's feet. In the afternoon we went to Cronulla and walked around the shops and the beach. I bought some stuff for Operation Christmas Child which was Hannah's idea for a group activity. On Sunday I slept in and did the laundry, then skipped High Five's (Deb said I could have a break) and went to church band practice and church. Monday and Tuesday I went to work feeling stressed. I was glad to leave on Tuesday. Wednesday to Friday morning Ben and I were away in the southern highlands, staying at a B&B called Brigadoon. It's owned by my mother-in-law's cousin. Ben's parents paid for the accommodation as an early birthday present for Ben. Tim and Ros also gave us money so we could go out to dinner. It was very windy up there and it might have been hot except for the wind. We drove to Berrima, had lunch and walked around the shops. I found a lovely wedding present for my friend from high school who is getting married next weekend and Ben picked up some more stuff for Operation Christmas Child. Then we went to Berkelouw's Book Barn which, disappointingly, didn't have much I was interested in, though Ben picked up a few paperbacks. Dinner was spent in Bowral eating Indian. On Thursday Ben was down. In hindsight, I probably should have gotten him up earlier but I thought he was tired and wanted to sleep. We didn't end up leaving the house until 3 and we drove to Mount Gibralter, climbed to the top and followed the Rim Track to the four lookouts. It was very pretty looking over Bowral and Mittagong but very windy. We had dinner at a funky restaurant called That Noodle Place. On Friday we drove home and I spent two hours packing and checking my email before I went off with the girls on the ECU staff team for our retreat. We stayed at my dad's house in Sydney and spent the afternoon lazing around, listening to our favourite songs. Denise came over to have dinner with us and then we piled into cars and drove through heavy traffic to New College to attend the New and Moore Literary Group, MC-ed by Greg Clarke. David and Christine Mangala Frost read from their novels and then there was a poetry section in which I and two other guys named Graham and Braddon read. We spent so much time chatting afterwards that I forgot about the time and it was 11 o'clock. We drove home—some of the other girls going off to buy some ice cream on the way—then had dessert and went to bed. In the morning, Liz and Stacie had prepared a marvellous breakfast for us. Liz had to go but the rest of us stuck around and made cards for the exiting ECU committee members which people would sign during the handover camp this week (not sure if I'm going to make it now that I'm sick). We had yum cha at the Imperial Peking which makes it the second week in a row I've had yum cha. Stacie dropped the rest of us home. I did laundry and made more cards for various people (birthday/engagement/wedding). I made lasagne and roasted vegetables for dinner and felt the stirrings of a sore throat ...
