So how was your weekend? Mine was quite eventful. On Thursday night Ben and I had a fight. On Friday we made up and watched DVDs of Pearl Jam live. On Saturday our car died and we had to borrow Tim and Liz's to drive to Sydney for our Moore College interview (I'll blog about that separately). We were half an hour early and the whole thing finished sooner than we expected. Ben had promised to visit his family but they were at the church fête running a stall for Cathy's bears. We went to visit and had lunch there. Ben was very tempted by the boxes of Krispy Kreme donuts (personally I don't see why they're so great). I got a copy of Angel of Darkness (Caleb Carr) for 50c.

Then we headed back to Wollongong and returned the car to Tim and Liz. Though I wanted to spend the whole afternoon reading Sandman, I made myself work on my Sunday school lesson, TEAM Unileavers material on money and a stack of other odd jobs. We were dining at Stacie's that evening with the So 'n So's, Jono, Kate and Pakman. Stacie had made thanksgiving dinner (even though it wasn't thanksgiving): roast turkey, beans, mashed potato, candied yams (not real yams—sweet potato), stuffing, apple cider and, to top it all off, pumpkin pie with whipped cream. (First time I've ever had pumpkin pie!) It was DELICIOUS!!! and we sat around for ages just talking about silly stuff while the rain drummed on the roof.

Kate was staying overnight with us and she had a car so she drove us all home. We were all pretty tired so we went straight to bed. Then, at 4 in the morning, Ben woke up all distressed—his shoulder was really sore and he was freaking out. He had just started his new medication and it wasn't treating him very well. I couldn't calm him down. He asked to go to hospital. I didn't know what to do so I rang Tim and Liz who were very good about being woken up and came straight over (there's not many friends who will do that for you!) They took us to the hospital (which is really only just up the road so perhaps I shouldn't have bothered them but I didn't know where Emergency was and it was just nice that they were there. Ben saw a nurse who said that she couldn't see anything wrong with his shoulder and she knew nothing about antidepressant medications anyway. Ben calmed down after that and asked to go home so we left. The Roedigers lent us their car in case we wanted to go see someone the following day. But Ben seemed to be all right after that, though he slept in until about 1 on Sunday.

I got at 11, did the laundry, finished off my Sunday school lesson, put together the poster and outline for this week as much as I could (because Matthew hadn't sent through his stuff yet) and read more Sandman. Liz rang in the afternoon to let us know that Stu from church, who had bought a new car a couple of weeks ago, still had his old one and he might let us borrow it. I rang Stu to ask him and he said yes and we could pick it up that afternoon. Tim drove us to Stu's place but Stu was running late and didn't arrive until quarter to 5. I rang my fellow Sunday school teacher to tell him I'd be running late and then Ben drove me to church (both of us anxiously watching the fuel meter because it was close to empty). I got there with enough time to spare to briefly set up just before Sunday school started, though I had to re-work a few things so that I could still do what I wanted to do without the copying I would have done if I had had time.

After Sunday school, I grabbed soup and bread (the 5 pm congregation always have soup and bread after their service in the winter) and headed over to band practice. Church started at 7 and Richard preached a very good sermon on Romans 3 (though Ben told me afterwards he doesn't agree with the interpretation of “faith of Jesus” instead of “faith in Jesus”). I felt like I was able to introduce the songs more appropriately than usual. We stayed around for a little bit after church but Ben was keen to head and I still had to write The Page. I finished at 12:30. Ah, ministry.

I feel stressed out by reading that! But I also have a strange craving for pumpkin pie, which I also have never tasted…

I opened my Bible to Romans 3, and find that I’ve written a note next to verse 22: The faithfulness of Jesus Christ for all who believe. So I must have had a sermon on that too. I like that interpretation myself.

Sorry to hear Ben’s been unwell lately; I’m always impressed by the perseverence you two have demonstrated in the face of suffering. I’ll try to remember to pray that the new medication brings some better results.

The idea of pumpkin pie seems so strange. And with whipped cream! Can’t decide if it’s yummy or yucky in my head…

Thank you, Ben. I think pumpkin pie needs to be tasted to be believed. It’s hard to imagine pumpkin as being sweet but it can be.
