So it's Sunday and I ought to be writing my article for Magnolia (to quote Paul Avery in Zodiac, “I've finished it—I just need to type it up.” “Avery, it's not finished until it's been typed up!” screams his editor). But I'm getting distracted by all these things which are way more interesting or annoying—my permalinks not working properly in Firefox (why is http://www.hippocampusextensions.com no longer working but http://hippocampusextensions.com is???), the washing machine overflowed because I left it filling for too long, Tilly and the Wall are kind of cool (and isn't it funny they have a tap dancer instead of a drummer! I wonder if they put her out front and centre instead of up the back where the drummers normally go ...), and Corinne Bailey Rae sounds as lovely as Bec said she was, and the Chauvel are screening that new documentary about John Lennon (I must take Ben!) and why does Movable Type work better with Internet Explorer? (By the way, I've now upgraded to 3.35 and am still resisting the urge to convert everything to individual archives. Put your vote in the comments and I'll think about whether it's worth the trouble it's going to cause me to do so.)
Friday I was feeling down but I finished the rest of the The Briefing stuff in the first couple of hours of the day. Elsie came to read the Bible with me and after talking to her, I felt better. It was also Friday Thai Day with the AFES crew (yum!) And Ben showed up not long after that to give me a hug. The internet was being stupid so when I left to go to counselling, Ben came with me and I dropped him home before continuing on. And traffic on the way home was pretty decent so it meant I was home in time for us to go to Norton St and catch a 6:10 the session of Zodiac (which we got to see for free because Ben got a double pass from when he went to see Deliver Us From Evil with Dave and the director fell asleep during the Q & A [or maybe I got that story wrong. Anyway, free tickets, yay!]). It was a very long film and I can't say I enjoyed it but it did have some brilliant bits about it—the cast, the script, the slow monotonous feel of “why-can't-we-solve-this-case” (not like Law & Order where it's solved within the hour), the years dragging on with no resolution, false leads, frustrating police bureaucracy, etc. Afterwards, we had Italian for dinner at Carpaccio and went home.
Saturday I meant to get up earlier than I did. Still, 12 hours of sleep was probably good for me, even if it meant I didn't do anything much for the rest of the day—mucked around on the internet, did some shopping for clothes, ironed Ben's suit (and burnt a hole in the lining of his pants—grr ...). Then Fish picked us up and drove us to Ryde for FEVA's Black Tie dinner. We had to be there early because Ben was coordinating parking. I was going to wear the dress I wore to our engagement party (which is now eight years old) but it had this weird crinkle that I couldn't get rid of—maybe because it's eight years old or maybe because of the fabric. So I wore my black velvet dress, plus the jewellery my father and stepmother gave me for our wedding. I also bought lipstick (and used it) and liquid eyeliner (but didn't use it—this video convinced me I didn't have the time to practise), and I had glitter on my face which everyone kept commenting on.
Our table was right down the front. We ate in the company of Ben's parents and sister, Fish and the Lohs. The theme was Christmas, there were snowflakes on the walls and the band was playing carols in jazz but it wasn't turkey in cranberry sauce—it was chestnut soup, pork with applesauce, beef, chocolate pudding, and so on (hmm, I thought I saved the menu but apparently not ...) All this was interspersed with a talk by Malcolm, video interviews about the student ministry (Cameron did this wonderful “live” cross over via satellite with FEVA staff on campus who interviewed the students involved in their Bible study groups, even pretending to run out down to UNSW campus to interview a student at the top of the Scientia building [tux and all]), stuff about Outreach media and so on. Everyone received a little pack that contained information about the FEVA ministry, some Christmas cards from last year, stuff about Outreach media and little postcards of some of the posters (June has to be my favourite so far). The silent auction went all night—my mother-in-law had brought a quilt which eventually sold for $190 (which is pretty good because the reserve on it was just $100) and my knitting service offer sold for $145 (but does it really count when your mother-in-law wins the bid? Only one other person bid on that item which is kind of sad. But this shouldn't be taken as a reflection of my knitting abilities ...) The proper auction took place at the end of the evening but some items attracted no bids. I'm not sure how much money FEVA raised from the night but hopefully people were generous in purchasing some of the “items” they had available to help the ministry—e.g. boxes of 100 stamps, MYC booklets for students, sponsoring students to go to MYC, etc.

did Ben leave his sunglasses there? I think there were a pair of sunglasses left there ont he table.
No, Ben doesn’t own sunglasses. Nor do I. They were there when we got there, strangely enough.
But we made sure we got some great photos with those sunnies…
