Genius printing

Thursday, 04 December, 2008

While we're on the subject of presents, I got the last of the goodies I ordered in the post today. This is also for my father for Christmas (good thing he doesn't read this blog):

It's my favourite photo of Ben and myself (which was taken at the Wollongong lighthouse last year around the time of my birthday) printed onto canvas and stretched onto a frame:

Ben and Karen

I don't know about you but I find it really hard to find good presents for my dad. He's one of those people of whom you say, “What do you get the man who has everything???” (Hence the Henry scarf.) This year, however, I didn't have time to make a Henry scarf. I was interested in doing something with photos, and certainly Flickr's “Do more with your photos” page had me intrigued. I stumbled across ImageKind's canvas prints, and even went as far as configuring one with the above photo, but the shipping would have been more expensive than the canvas!

I thought there had to be a local solution. After a bit of Googling, I came up with Genius Printing who are based in Victoria. They had a nice site with some interesting products and services, and a fairly easy wizard/form that allowed me to upload my photo and choose from different options and sizes. They even had a “Send me a free sample” option—which I took advantage of as I still wasn't sure what the quality of the final product would be like.

The sample took a little while to arrive because they print them in batches. But I still had plenty of time as this was November. It arrived in an A4 envelope unstretched, and I was pleased enough with the quality that I placed an order (plus they offered me a 10% discount). Insured shipping was around $16 to my workplace. And then two weeks later (today) it arrived by courier all nicely wrapped. They corrected the horizon line for me so it didn't slant. The edging is a pixel bleed:

And on the back is a wire for hanging and two foam pads to stop it from rubbing against the wall:

For $60 including shipping, I thought that was pretty good! And now that I know what they're like, I could get other people something similar.

Ooh…you could make artwork of your favourite album covers. But that could be breaching copyright. I’d love to have the cover of Blur’s best of album on something…

The first photo (which is cute) reminds me I could use a tripod.

A MonsterPod?

Heheh. I have a gorillapod but want something a bit more traditional that I can just set up and take reference photos with without having to resort to unlikely structures of books & chairs or co-opt housemates to take photos of me in awkward positions.
