Goings on

Friday, 17 September, 2004

I'm sick. I've got a sore throat (which isn't too bad) and a stomach bug (which feels like someone has plunged a knife into my belly and twisted it). A friend told me today that stomach bugs don't last more than three days so I'm hoping it will go away fairly soon. This weekend Ben and I are headed off to Club 5 for the weekend. In case you don't know, Club 5 is a conference for people who are thinking about going into full-time vocational paid ministery. The conferences are run by MTS all around Australia. There's a bit of a story about why it's call “Club 5” which I can't be bothered going into. The outsiders have now become insiders. The girl that Amanda and I have been meeting with has really thought long and hard about the stuff we've discussed from Mark about who Jesus is, why he came and what it means to be his follower. The wonderful thing is that she really really believes it! I wasn't at the meeting yesterday (due to being sick) but Amanda told me that she is calling herself a Christian, she is going to read the book of Mark at home and she wants to join a Commerce Bible study group. In addition, the couple who have been coming along to Introducing God seem to have turned to Christ fairly recently as well. The girl started telling us about her struggle to live a life pleasing to God in her workplace—how she was mindful about the things she said, how she didn't join in with the others when they were telling coarse jokes, how she even gently rebuked one of them for saying that sort of thing. It's so encouraging seeing God at work in their lives!! And answering our prayers too. Next week we're trying to get people in our faculty Bible study groups together for Operation Christmas Child (you put shoeboxes together full of little presents and Samaritan's Purse sends them overseas to needy children, sometimes using the giving of these boxes to tell kids the good news about God's greatest gift to us in Jesus). I was thinking it would be cool if we could make something to go in the boxes—like some sort of cute little stuffed toy (hence the surfing of many craft sites in the past week). The problem is, it would have to be simple, quick and very very easy. Anyone got any ideas? Maybe we could knit scarves ...? On Wednesday a guy from Australian Christian Lobby came to speak to us at staff meeting. I thought what he had to say was quite interesting but I'm not sure if I agree with it all. Politics is not my strong point, though. Stay tuned for a future blog post.

I’ve been thinking about Christians in politics lately too. So I would be keen for your thoughts. Though it troubles me a bit to go to those sites and see Christianity equated with “traditional family values”.

Yes, knit scarves! You could knit them in really fun crazy colours because they’re for little children. And if you use big chunky needles, they’ll be finished in no time.

Hi Karen.

I’m glad Intro God is going well. We (FOCUS at UTas) are running it at the moment and it looks like a couple of people are on the verge of becoming Christians! It’s so cool. smile Praise God.

BTW, how have you found the discussions after the talk/dvd?

Hello Shy! We get around 10-12 people coming every week, out of which there are about four or five outsiders (well, they used to be outsiders). Three of them are in my discussion group. The amazing thing is that all three seem to generally agree with what Dominic is saying—there’s only one who usually has issues with it and that’s not very often—really, she had more questions about various things that were answered in later weeks. So the discussion has been quite encouraging because you can see God has been working in them to bring them around to his way of thinking! smile

Elsie, I’m sure there were Morling people there but unfortunately I didn’t meet any of them.

Deb, I have to go get needles from my mum’s place as I have none down here :(. How many balls of wool do you reckon I’d need for one scarf? I’m thinking three ...?

I had a weird stomach virus sort of like that last year. It honestly feels like this intense knife-twisty pain in your stomach ever so often. It’s horrid. Hope you feel better.
