Green Peas

Sunday, 23 November, 2003

Just letting you know that last Thursday Ben and I graduated from red P's to green P's. (If you have no idea what I'm talking about, “P” stands for “Provisional” and, in this context, it is being referred to in relation to licenses. In NSW the licensing scheme works like this: You first sit a knowledge test which is all about the road rules and, if you pass, you get your “L's” [leaner's license]. When you've clocked up 50 hours of driving experience in all sorts of weather conditions on all sorts of roads [recorded in a logbook], you are then eligible to do a practical driving test which, if you pass, will mean you can get your red P's [provisional 1 license]. You must have your red P's for 1 year before you can sit the Hazard Perception Test which is a lot like a computer game; you have to touch the screen to do various things. If you pass, you move on to green P's. You must have held your green P's for a minimum of 2 years before you sit one more test [Driver Qualification Test] to get your full license.) We can now drive at 100 kph. Yay.

Cool! I got my green Ps in October and haven’t regretted it one bit. The new license photo technique doesn’t do much for me, though.

Yes, my photo looks extremely silly. But at least it’s not as bad as my staff card.

My goodness - has it been a year already?

Way to go you guys!

Yeah you NSW’ers do it weird.  I must say I enjoyed driving to Sydney going past locals on their P’s doing 80 while I was on 110!  It’s a bit of a dumb distinction don’t you think?  Like how many accidents happen with P platers driving at the speed limit?

Congratulations anyways!

I think the idea is to prevent P-platers from speeding in the first place, i.e. nabbing them while they’re doing 100km/h when they’re restricted to 90km/h. That said, I agree that a lot of accidents happen when P-platers are speeding and/or have imbibed sufficient quantities of alcohol.

Interesting.  Thanks for explaining how driving is done over there!  I still think Canada has an easier process to go about getting a license; however, your process is probably safer in the long run!  I like the idea of clocking 50 hours in all types of weather conditions.  That’s brilliant - we need it up here in the Great White North!!
