King St and UNSW

Friday, 18 March, 2005

So after college today (in which we finished off our lecture on the missionary monks and the eccentric pillar saints, heard John Woodhouse preach on the latter half of 1 Samuel 10, thought about the communication process and where the locus of meaning resides, and ate Thai food for lunch with the rest of the B&M-ers), I went present-hunting and King St-exploring. With so many birthdays coming up, it pays to try and get them all catered for in one hit. And I'd never ventured farther than the pub down King St (not the Sandringham, the Marlborough I think it is). This proved to be a bit dangerous; I found a second-hand fluffy jacket that goes will with my fluffy skirt (so all I need to do is make myself a fluffy hat!) and I found all my presents in Holy Sheet! which meant that I had a lot to lug around on the bus to Kensington. (Oh yes, I also ventured into Tree of Life and admired all the ridiculously expensive clothes.)

Catching public transport in Sydney again is a bit strange—all the bus drivers seem to expect you to know the routes and fares like the back of your hand and if you were feeling especially duplicitous, you could probably cheat them out of half your fare. I got to UNSW at around 3:30 and found that some of the individuals I was hoping to visit had gone. However, I was able to catch up with people around Morven Brown I hadn't seen in two years and who were certainly not expecting to see me! It's odd to see how things have changed and yet things stay the same. I wonder if anyone becomes really comfortable with the passing of time. I walk into the campus shop and discover that half of it's been turned into a graduations/souvenir shop. I climb the stairs of the building I worked in for three and a bit years and am struck by how much lighter the corridors look with this fresh lick of paint. Systems and procedures are still frustrating, certain students are still finding ways to break the rules and people I once knew have departed this world forever. It makes me feel so old.

King St is so cool! I love second-hand shops - have picked up so many bargains especially Christian books smile We should raid King St together one day!

Yes, indeed we should! When I don’t have to carry around my college textbooks and am not paranoid about my laptop being stolen.
