Lines of mediocrity

Tuesday, 12 June, 2007

So I finished my Salt article at 11:30 last night and experienced that rush of adrenalin you get when you finish something and, of course, at that hour of night, it's BRILLIANT! It was also 300 words over the limit but it was still brilliant (I hope you realise I'm kidding!)

Today was a great day: after dropping Ben at college, I went in to work at New College at 8:30 and left promptly at 2:30. It was so nice to go home and have all this free time. I spent it clearing the mess off my desk—filing old newsletters, writing to our sponsor child, answering email and reading all manner of interesting things.

The latest issue of Knitty is now online but nothing is screaming out “Knit me! Knit me!” at the moment. Elann had this very pretty shawl pattern I might attempt one day. I'm not much of a shawl person ... but perhaps I could be.

This site is quite a useful one to tell you which week we're up to in the year (it's 24; almost halfway there!) “Why would you want to know that?” you ask? So I can figure out how much we've spent on food per week so far (roughly $110/week ... that sounds a bit much. Is that too much? That figure also includes the times we've eaten out.)

Fish sent me a link to “How to be creative” which contained such guilt-inducing advice as “Ignore everybody”, “Put the hours in” and “The best way to get approval is not to need it” (when will I stop needing approval???) But it also contained some very sage advice such as “Keep your day job”, “Never compare your inside with somebody else's outside” and “Nobody cares. Do it for yourself”. So I will keep pushing on with my graphic novel ...

Did you know Sondheim will be in town next month? (*Jumps up and down wildly*.) There was a time when I listened to Sondheim musicals almost exclusively (it was partly because a friend at school was very scornful of rock 'n roll, but we both loved Sondheim and would sing him at the top of our lungs on certain occasions). Of all his shows, I think Sunday in the Park with George is my favourite—it captures the whole artistic dilemma so well. But I have a great fondness for Into the Woods and Sweeney Todd (the latter is going to be made into a movie, I think ... Google Google Google ... yes. A movie with Tim Burton and Johnny Depp playing Sweeney Todd, Helena Bonham Carter as Mrs Lovett [what a scream!], Alan Rickman as Judge Turpin [how perfect!], Sacha Baron Cohen as Pirelli [priceless!] and some people I've never heard of as Johanna and Anthony. My expectations are now raised; I hope it's wonderful stuff).

Amelia Haines talks about Grey's Anatomy (Amelia is Greg's wife). What a scream!

And wow ... Andrew Bird ... I'm listening to a live recording of him at Studio 105, Lenoir and it's wonderful. Go have a listen.

I'm going easy on myself and skipping Bible study because at the moment Bible study is stressing me out and I'm not handling it. (Long story.) I'll probably go back next week. For now, it is lovely to have the extra time and space to just stretch out and not worry—not stress—about anything.

(Oh, and yesterday the lovely Bron left me food and a note on the back of a Maxfield Parrish postcard. So kind!)

i skipped biblestudy too (another long story). I went to make-up pilates class at Leichhardt instead and yet it didn’t have the soothing result i was hoping for. Anyway if you want to skip out on it again and come to pilates with me…its at 7.30. I thought you might love the dragon on the card.
