After frenzied packing the night before, dinner with my mother and Peter, and several birthday well-wishers dropping by to give me presents and flowers which I will not be able to enjoy, we rise at some ungodly hour before the world is stirring and set off at about 7 am.

Ben has instituted driving rules: each driver is to drive for the length of two whole albums. Of the two, the driver is to choose one album and the passenger is to choose the other. Both have the right to veto only once per turn. And so we spend a pleasant 9 hours in the car, listening to the likes of Spoon, Neil Finn, Nicole Nordeman and I forget who else, stopping for lunch in Bega at a place called Diaspora (owned by a woman who used to live in Crows Nest), and eventually, just as the petrol tank is running on empty, finding the caravan park where Ben stayed last year in Lakes Entrance. We walk along the boardwalk, eat fish and chips for dinner, watch The Simpsons and then I try unsuccessfuly to knit this bookmark (I pulled it out four times before giving up and attempting this one instead).
