On Wednesday night I met Elsie at Ayam Goreng in Kingsford for dinner (I had this strange thing called a Kampur which I thought was a drink but it wasn't—it had jelly and fruit in it and a bit of avocado at the bottom, and crushed ice on top). We caught the bus into Circular Quay in good time and had a nice leisurely walk up to the Opera House. I love how all along that way you can sit right on the water's edge and look out over the harbour. I wonder if that would be a good place to write.
We were in the Studio for the first night of the Jazz: Now 06 series, and, when the doors opened, we were one of the first people in there. Seating was pre-booked, of course, and I must have booked pretty fast because we ended up on the last table—Table L. (When I was talking to Haydn about it, he remarked that it must have been pretty expensive to go, being the Opera House and all, but with the booking fee it was around $34 a ticket which wasn't too bad, all things considering. Plus the Opera House is usually keen to get the younger crowd in as their core audience is getting older and older.)
There were two acts for the evening: the Aron Ottignon trio (who were fabulous, particularly the drummer, Felix Bloxsom, who is now off in LA. They played jazz that was bordering on the unlistenable but never quite got there—it was interesting and fabulous and the crowd really got into it. Plus they did this wonderful version of “Moonlight in Vermont”) and Elixir Vitae with Katie Noonan, Isaac Hurren and Steve Magnusson. Katie was the main reason why we had come and it was spectacular hearing her perform live (I've never seen her perform before). She was very pregnant and apparently this is her last performance for the year (however she wil be releasing a solo album early next year and Felix Bloxsom plays on it). They did a couple of numbers from their first album such as “Rasberry Tea”, “Saigon Battle Children 1972” and “Drunk on Her Taste” (and I was very pleased that their last number was “Tip of Memory”) as well as a couple of new songs which were poetry (by Martin Challis and Thomas Shapcott) set to music. They also did a cover of Leonard Cohen's “Hallelujah”.
After the performance, Katie and Isaac came out to sign CDs and Elsie obligingly snapped photos for me. (I discovered too late that my camera battery was flat but Elsie very generously lent me her camera so I could happy snap away. Funny how reducing the photos down masks how out of focus they are.)

Afterwards Elsie and I caught the bus back to Kingsford, I drove her back to her place and then went home. I didn't get to sleep until around midnight and I was pretty tired and too weak the next day to stave off the office cold. So now I am sick. But it was worth going on Wednesday night!
