From the stage his eyes wandered to the point of the horseshoe where May sat between two older ladies, just as, on that former evening, she had sat between Mrs. Lovell Mingott and her newly-arrived “foreign” cousin. As on that evening, she was all in white; and Archer, who had not noticed what she wore, recognised the blue-white satin and old lace of her wedding dress ... It was the custom, in old New York, for brides to appear in this costly garment during the first year or two of marriage ...
(Edith Wharton, The Age of Innocence, Chapter 32)
For the first couple years of my marriage, I used to wear my wedding dress to costume parties. I'd go as a white fairy (a friend made me some really cool wings out of some coathangers and white stockings) or the Princess Bride or some such thing. My wedding dress wasn't very “wedding-y”, if I can put it that way; it didn't require a hoop skirt, it wasn't a “meringue” and it didn't look out of place in a high school formal. It came from StudiBaker and, if I could upload photos from my work computer, I'd show you what it looked like. I really liked wearing it to costume parties because it's the most expensive dress I own and it seems like quite a shame to only wear it once, given the amount I paid for it.
But now it's official: I can no longer fit into it. I suppose it's inevitable since I've been married now for five years and I've grown somewhat. The funny thing is I haven't put on weight; it's other parts of me that are the problem. *Sigh!*
