Tonight we are going to the German Club to celebrate a friend's birthday from church. I messaged him this morning to find out the dress code and he said, “Smart casual.” What is smart casual?? If Ben were awake, he'd be saying that there's no such thing because no one knows what it means. According to this site,
Smart casual means smart clothing that is not formal. So smart pants or a skirt, a blouse, jacket and high heels are what you could wear. Also a smart knitted top or a smart dress in evening wear fabric (eg: wool, silk, satin, peach skin, georgette) are options. Basically you do have to dress up but not to the extent of a black tie-do. So, jeans and t-shirts are a no-no.
Not sure if that helps. Anyone else have any ideas?

For me, smart casual has always been trousers and a button-up shirt (short sleeve or long), usually sans-tie. I don’t know what it is for girls - the girls I have seen at smart-casual events have always worn button-up shirts/blouses with long skirts or pants. But that’s exactly what the site said, wasn’t it?
Then there’s business casual, which means no ties.
Largely irrelevant, but did you know that there is a 2 minute preview for Howl’s Moving Castle?

Hmm, not sure if I own any button-up blouses for winter ...
Thanks for the link, Kathleen! I visited that site a week ago and got excited over the poster art but hadn’t seen the stuff about the trailer!
Other Miyazaki stuff seems to be headed your way. Laputa: Castle in the Sky and Whisper of the Heart are my favourites.
Things are always more complicated for girls.
For “smart casual”, I usually wear nice trousers, or a knee-length or longer skirt, with a knit top or blouse in a plain colour. No t-shirt material. Dark colours are dressier than light colours.
Generally, as long as your shoes are good and clean and smart, the rest looks okay.
Make sure everything’s pressed nicely too.
I’ve read somewhere that it’s twofld definition: either expensive clothes dressed down (eg $500 torn designer jeans, with that crushed cotton vintage-copy shirt you paid $200 for) for those who can afford it, and cheap clothes dressed up (eg your Myers/Target/Lowes chinos and shirt). The principle being that you have to move further to the smart end of the scale from the casual end the lower your total outfit spend.
But fashion is a fickle beast. And I cerntainly don’t dress like that. Jeans and a footy jumper unless is specifically says black tie.
For me it means putting on the ‘good’ jeans.
