Which Austen heroine are you?

Friday, 14 November, 2003

I am Marianne Dashwood

I don't normally do quizes but I couldn't resist this one; after all, it's Austen:

You are Marianne Dashwood of Sense & Sensibility! You are impulsive, romantic, impatient, and perhaps a little to vocal in your honesty. You enjoy romantic poetry and novels, and play the pianoforte beautifully. To boot, your singing voice is captivating. You feel deeply and love passionately.

Which is funny because I thought I was more like Elinor than Marianne. (Maybe it was that question, “If you were portrayed in a film or TV movie, it would be by...,” that tipped the scales; I always liked Kate Winslet's portrayal of Marianne in that film.)

I think girls love Austen because she writes about heroines who are strong and admirable as well as real and flawed. We can identify with them. Some of us take them on as role models and we return to them again and again. Understandable, really, considering the small number of admirable female role models out there.

Well, slow arvo at work makes you do interesting things…

I’ve ended up with ... Elinor Dashwood of Sense & Sensibility - You are practical, circumspect, and discreet. Though you are tremendously sensible and allow your head to rule, you have a deep, emotional side that few people often see.

No, girls like Jane Austen because of all the pretty dresses wink (Nooo, I think you’re right.)

I’m getting a little worried about all the boys out there doing this quiz!

Maybe they want to emulate Austen heroines as role models??

Are you at work doing all of this?

No, Philip, I’m at home spending too much time online.

Hmm, I got Lizzy from Pride and Prejudice… Well, I do have a tendancy to judge people, but I wouldn’t call myself witty. ;p

I’m at work doing this. I sinned 3 times today, when I bought my yogurt, when I bought my vanilla-coke (both not in my diet) and when I wrote this last message.

Us boys do them because we want to see what role models girls emulate, hence allowing us insight into the mystery of their psyche wink

Or maybe we’re just bored.
