What do you mean, “of the ‘better’”?

These are Christian reasons to get married. Not reasons why Christians get married as you suggest in your title “Why do Christians long to get married”.

If you asked Christians why they “long to get married” to get their true reasons which they have in mind, I’m sure you would get different reasons to these.

People don’t initally look to Gods word to find their motivation to get married. They are friends, get chemistry together and date and that leads to talk of marriage after a longer term. No guy sits down with a girl and says I want a “helper fit for me” (Genesis 2:20), you qualify, lets get married. He might say he is “aflame with passion”, but in different words!

My point is that I don’t agree that these are the reasons why a lot of Christians get married. I think you would have to do a survey.

Yes and no. From my point of view, these are reasons from God’s word that explain to me why I would like to be married, even though I am content being a spinster wink

I used to think it quite odd for me to long to get married one day without having a particular person in mind. Rationally, your experience of marriage depends on the person you’re married to, doesn’t it. But reasons such as the first four imply that this is the way God made us, so it’s all happy and natural.

But it would be nice if Christian culture affirmed singleness the same way that 1 Cor 7:32-35 does.

Yes, I agree, Deb! The Single Issue by Al Hsu has a great chapter about the history of singleness in the church which rebalances the focus somewhat.

When I said “of the better”, I meant, “because of the better” as opposed to “because of the worse”.

Unless he’s in Jane Eyre.
